BEHIND THE CROWN

The legacy of family, the promise of quality.

  • 1938
    Fayette D. “Fate” Leebern founds Columbus Wine Company Distributors in Columbus, Georgia. The business is credited with unloading the first legal carload of liquor in Georgia after the end of Prohibition in 1933.
  • 1949
    Columbus Wine Company Distributors is incorporated in Muscogee County, Georgia, at which time the name is changed to Georgia Crown Distributing Co. The company’s new identity sheds the regionality of its previous name, positioning itself as a statewide operation.
  • 1980
    Alabama Crown Distributing Co. is established, as Georgia Crown expands into the state of Alabama, establishing a warehouse and distribution network in Dothan, Alabama. Initially, the company distributed only non-alcoholic beverages and mixers.
  • 1980
    Alabama Crown expands into the Mobile market, with the acquisition of the San Pedro Wine Company. Expansion into the Montgomery market is also established around this time.
  • 1981
    The Birmingham market is opened for distribution with the acquisition of Sterling/Pabst Distributing.
  • 1982
    A new warehouse is built in Huntsville, Alabama, serving the northern portion of the state. Previously serviced out of the Birmingham facility, the Huntsville warehouse localized distribution for the growing market.
  • 1990
    Alabama Crown’s Dothan operation is consolidated into the Montgomery facility.
  • 2002
    In efforts to further centralize inventory management, the Huntsville location is closed and consolidated into the Birmingham facility.
  • 2014
    A new, state-of-the-art central facility for Alabama Crown Distributing Co. is opened in Alabaster, Alabama, in the Birmingham metro area. The existing Birmingham, Mobile, and Montgomery warehouses are closed and centralized in the Alabaster location, providing efficient inventory management, operations, and logistics under one roof.
  • 2018
    55,000 square feet of additional warehouse space is added to the Alabaster central facility, signaling the company’s rapid growth and need for additional inventory to serve Alabama’s retail tier.
  • 2023
    Expanding its specialty offerings, Alabama Crown secures the rights to distribute Nesquik milk products and Essentia water in early 2023.
  • 2024
    Alabama Crown’s already impressive book of wine and beer brands grows significantly with the purchase of distribution rights for a majority of the wine and craft beer brands of International Wines, Inc.
